Haenel Character Reference

Next up, because I'm going alphabetically through the swordies, is Haenel! Haenel is highly-strung, depressed and joined the army, and subsequently the King's Own, so he could kill Kazinians in revenge for killing his family that one time. He's the newbie who comes in to replace General Rau after his death, so he won his way in by beating everyone else in First Company rather than by beating one of the Own. Haenel is always up for a fight, so here he is with his resting bitchface, foot up and knee probably jiggling, daring anyone to come at me, bro. As soon as people start talking to him, tho, the mask comes up and he's jovial, brilliant sense of humour, all to hide the depression. Haenel's fun.
He's not particularly showy in his clothing, usually goes more for interesting cuts or colours over patterning and embroidery, which he feels doesn't fit a warrior. Always linen or cotton for comfort, not into flouncy silk or anything much spangly, though he does wear any one of a few gold chains just as a status symbol.
SWORD God, the weaving broke me xX It was a redback spider before, which had nothing to do with his character, but I've twisted it around now to being a silk spider. His family, when they were killed, were travelling merchants, especially trading in textiles, of which the most expensive is silk, so silk spider! Which seems to be mostly yellow with a black abdomen with purple spots and yellow stripes. I was looking up spiders for inspiration to create this thing and there are some ridiculously beautiful spiders in the real world, including this one that looks like it's literally made out of mirrors, so whatever I come up with will still be legit. Anyway. Intricate weaving on the leather of his hilt and scabbard, with an extra bit of engraving detailing on the blade in a traditional weaving pattern, to harken back to his family's trading days. He hated that life, but never wanted them to die, so his sword's his little bit of sentimentality, as well as a remider when he's in Kazin killing Kazinians. YEP.
BILBY Formerly Shadow, a white horse with black mane and tail, but that colouration is now more associated with the Assiraz makaki so it doesn't at all fit Haenel and his warrior aesthetic, so now it has the markings of a bilby, mostly grey with a white throat and feet and a bit more of a mousey brown belly, then the black mane and tail with a white tip, and he keeps the bare nose so Haenel still has to put suncream on to stop it burning when he goes outside. Bilby is stubborn, nowhere near Mongrel's level, so here he is straining against the reins.

And I love the entire like... personality in Haenel's posture and pose. SO GOOOOD

This is why they sit :D I can get so much more personality across in sitting poses, soon as I saw this one I knew it fitted for Haenel.
