Character Reference

![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)
Because the old ones were getting a bit... old, I've been redoing the character design reference sheets. Starting out with the lovely 'min:

The healers all wear green 'cept the head healer, who, as you can see, wears bloo. Also got the green dot on her forehead, which I've forgotten on so many pictures of her. I'd kinda decided that it was just touching the hairline, so her fringe would hide it, then decided that was stupid, because what about all the other fringed healers, who aren't as easily distinguishable as Yamin? So it's lower down now. All healers have the green dot, even when out of uniform. That's so that if anyone needs any medical help and can't get to a healing house, they know who to ask straight up. Obviously shows up better on olive skin than 'min's white, but she wears it anyway. The gold band on her left arm is earnt upon gaining status as a full healer. There's no healing exam--as soon as the head healer reckon's a trainee's ready, she'll hand over the gold band.
Next is her disguise~ for when she's outside the healing house. Same colour as the palace staff uniforms, and much the same style, only without the hood, sleeves or long skirt, so with the hood pulled down she can be relatively inconspicuous.
The middle one was originally designed as her casuals, but as Raykin--and Yamin--have developped, it's become pretty damn obvious that this is just too detailed to be casuals for anyone but nobility, and even then nobility who likes showing of. While 'min is prolly about as rich as the average noble--head healer at the palace healing house is hardly a sallary to sniff at--she was born and raised as upper-middle class. She's hardly into showing off. So this is now the uniform of the scribes. Mirrored and with pants for the guys.
Finally~ ceremonial robes, with a bit of a dodgy face, but whatever. I love her ceremonial robes~! *^^* Was originally going to be leaves and vines, but~ then I realised there prolly aren't a lot of vines in Raykin, what with them being typically tropical and temperate, so she's got snakes instead. No, I don't know what kind. Not the right kind of green for a green mamba, so I dunno. The plant on the front tho, that's a flower of life, which I wrote up here. Basically, healer's plant, stuck out the front of a healing house so it's easily recognised. As per tradition, the top part is the darker piece, and has no embroidery or anything on it, while the bottom piece is the lighter and has all the designs, more elaborate for the rich. Which is why Nol's killed me ast time I drew it, and why I'm not looking forward to drawing it again, but will anyway ><;;;;;;; 'min's is fun tho =D And I remembered her wing clasp thingies! =D
So, there's the 'min =D No, there are no piccies of her with wings, cos I know what her wings look like, and couldn't be bothered drawing a forth picci of her. Might do when I've finished them all, but prolly not.
Redoing the old character reference sheets, here's 'may =D

In a word: BLACK! =D;; I was getting really annoyed with my black pencil on this one. See, I've finally gotten myself a new Derwent Artist black, instead of just using left over black ones from school pencil sets, and in the many years that have passed since I've owned a black Derwent, they must've changed the formula for it or something, so now it can't do proper BLACK. Derwent black used to be seriously dark, no white paper showing through at all, but this one comes up bumpy and patchy and just generally not smooth. Got better once I got onto the ceremonial gear, but still not happy. Naturally the scanner mangled it even further, but that was expected. Not happy with Derwent black anymore tho. Fleh.
Anyway, black. Yeah, that's General uniform for ya. The higher up you are, the more black you get. Third Generals have just the leather part of their top (basically the right shoulder) in black, Second Generals have the shoulder and their pants in black, First General is all~ black, because by the time you're that high people know what your weapon of choice is, so don't need to advertise that, and of course, General of the Own is all~ black with some special silver trimmings. Cos they're special.
Redesigned it oh-so-slightly, so it's in the same design as the other uniforms. Was a bit on the skimpy side around the shoulders before. Also, first time EVER that I've forgotten the extra belt thingie that keeps her scabbard from flapping around, and it's on the character design sheet. I suck. Anyway, that's still silver.
She also has a shinier cloak, with the fur of some unfortunate fluffy Kazinian animal lining the inside, ooh. That's actually been there for a while, I just haven't drawn it.
Her ceremonial robes~ remind me of Ferrari. Honestly tho, I couldn't think of anything to put on it that wouldn't be cliché. Flower of death might work, except that 'min's already got the flower of life, and she's far more suited to that than 'may is to the flower of death. An yrae might~ work, but again, cliché, and the blue would clash a bit ^^; So, she's got Ashburn embroidered there, with wingies. Could be symbolic, but really it was just a way of taking up space =3;;;
Black obviously cos she's General, and red cos she's a swordie. Which ends up giving me a black horse rearing on a red background. Now we know the real~ reason why if Nol was going to get a car, it'd be a Ferrari XD;;
Also? I want that hair clip.
Nol has way too many uniforms. and most of them are damn complicated xX Why does he have to be smegging royalty? ><;;; Anyway, yus, here he is, and here's the old sheet for comparison.

Hooey. Aeia-damned royalty .-. Anyway, there he is. Sessy boi X3
Army uniform hasn't changed, except that he's now got a cloak. Nondescript brown lined with what I imagine to be possum fur. Obviously I couldn't be stuffed redrawing him from behind to show the quiver, so it's floating above him at the mo. And~ stuff. Don't really have much to say about that one, same as it's ever been.
Official royal uniform, which he wears whenever he's doing official royal business. If it's just general paperwork he wouldn't bother with the coat thing, that's just there to make it look more impressive for the foreign dignitaries X3 No crown, cos as you should all know by now, he hates the damn thing.
Frikkin bloody ceremonial robes xX Why~ is he royalty? ><;; I really do pity the poor woman who had to embroider this thing. Also, that blue scanned like crap. Pity that, it's a really nice blue. But yeah, this took forever~ .-.; With all the other ref pics, including the twins, I've been doing them during the cricket, and it's taken about 30 overs to do one pic, meaning I could basically do three during a match with a bit of time to just sit and watch the last ten overs or so. This one? Struggling to fit it in 50 overs. Took me the entire match this arvo/evening just for these two pics. Fuh xX Did turn out nice tho, and I don't have to do it again until I next decide to torture myself XD;;
YAY NOL'S DONE. THANK GAWD FOR THAT. *carks it*
And with the re-drawing of Yan, that's the end~ of all the black. THANK GAWD FOR THAT. My black has seriously suffered. It's half the length it was three weeks ago now. What is it with me and characters and BLACK? xX;; Anyway, yes, Yan. There's his original design sheet, and now~ he looks like this:

Yep, I've gotten rid of the oh-so-cliché black cloak. He may be dead, but he still feels heat, so a black cloak in the middle of the desert was never going to work. Now it's kinda terracotta brown, shirt is more of an orangey brown, and pants just non-descript brown. Kept the black boots tho cos Alyssa likes them X3 His sword's still the same--pretty ordinary looking thing really, 'cept for the silver yrae on the pommel. Basically, he doesn't stick out like a sore thum--I put his ring on the wrong finger. Oh CRAP. It's s'posed to be on his right hand >< Why'm I suddenly buggering up on the most basic of design aspects, on the bloody character reference sheets? Fuh~~
Anyway, yeah, doesn't stick out like a sore thumb anymore, dressed entirely in black. I mean, assuming he takes the ring off and doesn't have those bloody great wings out. Either that, or draw them in as in the bottom right picci, which you can't really see too well. Basically, he hooks the claw over his shounder, so the 'elbow' of the wing is down near his ankles. Each 'finger' has a joint in it too, so that's down by his ankles as well, with the tips up against his chest, then the whole lot covered over with the brown cloak.
I've never actually done him with his full wingspan out before, and technically I haven't here either. He can stretch his wings out a good deal further than that. You can kinda see why I don't tho. I mean, he's 7cm tall there and takes up half an A4 page, and still not at full span. Bastid.
So yeah, there he is. He hasn't changed himself, just the colour of his clothes, because damnit I'm so sick of black now .-. All that's left is Lynnlita and Mithé, and the only black there is Mithé's hair. WOO!
Lynnlita's original was just embarassing, poor girl XD;;

Much~ better. She doesn't have any standard "uniform" like the other charries, doesn't even have a standard crown, so only one picci of her. The only thing that's permenantly a part of her design is the necklace, other than that, just anything fancy and Llayan. Her favourite colours are blue and yellow tho, so she'll tend to gravitate towards those colours.
Feather boas are still incredibly fun to colour X3
Last of the redone character ref sheets, it's a Mithé =D He didn't really have an original--This is the closest he came really, and I've never drawn him in that stuff since, so~ I dunno. Anyway! Redraw:

Yeah~ I got lazy. Technically there should be six drawings here, but I couldn't be screwed, mostly because there's no more cricket until the end of the month. His royal gear follows the same pattern as Nol's, just with different colours and obviously king's insignia in the place of crown prince, and he actually wears his crown with it XD;
Ceremonial gear I'm a lot happier with than I thought I'd be, because I seriously had no~ idea what to give him. It had to be more impressive than Nol's, but like hell I was going to make it that bloody detailed again xX So~ it's all swirly and gold. And, I've only just realised, very Crow-y XD; Because of course, Crows = navy, red and gold. Go Mithé XD Dunno exactly what the back looks like. I'd imagine much the same only without the kinda chain thing near-ish the bottom. Not like I'm going to be drawing him in ceremonial gear from behind anyway. I barely draw the poor guy at all ^^;;
Still, he's got a proper design now, instead of just having a random grey mop for hair. He actually looks like a king now! =DD
